About

Wim Catrysse (°1973), lives and works in Antwerp. He gained a Masters degree in Visual Arts at the Luca School of Arts, Brussels in 1997. From 1997 to 2000, he took part in the postgraduate program at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp, followed by a one-year course at The Glasgow School of Art.

Ever since the late 1990s, Catrysse has been surveying the confines of visual constructions in his video installations, taking an architectural structure or the topographical features of a site as his starting point. He translates this investigation into cinematographic works in which the exposing and balancing of elementary forces play an essential role. The result is an accumulation of images that jerk us out of our comfort zone, that convey a physical threat, images that have about them something unheimlich and often unseats the obviousness of our most common perceptions.

Catrysse's particular artistic method combines two apparently irreconcilable extremes: impulsiveness, physical directness, intuition and experimentation (almost nothing is worked out in detail beforehand) on the one hand and on the other an acute artistic and technical reasoning that can sometimes lead to complex cinematographic image constructions.

Wim Catrysse has participated in numerous exhibitions, both solo and group exhibitions as well as screenings, at international institutions, including Ruhrtriennale, Essen | Kunstmuseum Bonn | S.M.A.K., Ghent | Jeu de Paume, Paris | MuHKA, Antwerp | Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv | Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen | Arts Santa Monica, Barcelona | Extra City, Antwerp | HKW, Berlin | Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam | MACRO, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome.

Catrysse co-founded and collaborates with Escautville, a production platform for audiovisual work.

A transfixing look at how Belgian artist filmmaker, Wim Catrysse surveys the dynamics of self-constructed architectural settings or the potentially fictitious characteristics of phenomenal environments. His films challenge both participants and viewers in a basic, primordial way through the evocation of vertigo. This precondition of boundaries operates to expose the observer to underlying motives. Catrysses artistic approach combines intuition with technical reasoning, often leading to complex cinematographic image constructions. Besides critical analyses of his works, the book includes numerous images from films.

“The video installations by Wim Catrysse (°1973) appeal physically and directly to the spectator’s world of experience. Through simple technical means he realises highly suggestive images, which play with the existential context of the individual. His attention is principally aimed at corporeal expression, at the language of the body. The images have an alienating and grasping side to them, which is supported by the fragmentation of sound and image, the intensity and the ephemeral character. This first survey publication about his work contains an essay by Jon Thompson and an interview with the artist by Sam Ainsley.” (Source: Argos)
